Responsible brain centers
A large number of studies aimed at studying the processes of memory and memory. And, in general, they are studied quite well. But here’s how the process of “physiological” forgetting (that is, not related to neurodegenerative processes) takes place, was known very little. And not so long ago, a group of scientists discovered a department in the brain that is responsible for “erasing memory.”
Responsible for the discovery of a group of neuroscientists from Germany, Switzerland, Holland and the UK, and their work writes the publication Current Biology. In the course of research, scientists found out what happens in the brain when a person specifically tries to forget something. It turned out that the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus are responsible for this. But not everything is so simple.
For the experiment, 22 patients were involved in which they implanted special electrodes that record brain activity. Then scientists called the words that needed to be memorized, as well as those that needed to be forgotten. Of course, forgetting words is not so easy, especially on purpose. However, according to the results of the experiment, it turned out that the participants remembered worse than precisely those words that “had to be forgotten”.
After the final survey, the signals from the implanted electrodes were collected and analyzed. It turned out that in the hippocampus (temporal lobes) and the prefrontal cortex (frontal lobe), at the moment of the “forget” command, rhythmic activity arose. Moreover, it arose first in the prefrontal cortex, after which it “moved” into the hippocampus. The latter structure has long been known as one of the centers of memory, but it was possible to confirm what it was responsible for forgetting the information for the first time. The authors of the paper argue that new data can help in the development of new treatments for post-traumatic disorders and help people get rid of unwanted memories.
